Candidate Qualifications:

  • Be a United States citizen;
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled by the election;
  • Be a registered voter of the territory from which the office is elected as of the date of the filing deadline for a candidate’s place on the ballot. For the position of Mayor, the territory is the entire city; for Council Member’s the territory is the ward:
    • To be eligible for the office of Mayor, a person must be a registered voter and must have resided within the municipal limits for at least the 12 months preceding the election day;
    • To be eligible for the office of Council Member of the municipality, a person must be a registered voter and must reside on election day in the ward from which the person may be elected.
  • Not have been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released; and,
  • Not have been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be (A) totally mentally incapacitated; or (B) partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

Disqualification from Office:

  • An officer who is entrusted with the collection or custody of funds belonging to the municipality and who is in default to the municipality may not hold any municipal office until the amount of the default, plus 10 percent interest, is paid to the municipality.
  • If a member of the governing body changes the member’s place of residence to a location outside the corporate boundaries of the municipality, the member is automatically disqualified from holding the member’s office and the office is considered vacant.

Application for a Place on the Ballot – Link to the Texas Secretary of State’s website.

  • January 15, 2025 is the first day to file an application for a place on the ballot for the May 3, 2025 Election.
  • Applications must be filed in the City Secretary’s office no later than 5:00 p.m. on February 14, 2025.
  • Please note that the application has a section for your email address. Your email is optional, however, candidate applications are available to the public and will be uploaded to the City’s website.

Request For Confidentiality For Candidates Under Texas Government Code – Qualifying individuals only.

Appointment of Campaign Treasurer – All candidates must file Form CTA even if you do not intend to raise or spend money. This form is required to be submitted with the “local authority” according to the Texas Ethics Commission. The Aurora City Secretary is the local authority for Aurora elections. The form and instructions are prepared by the Texas Ethics Commission.

Code of Fair Campaign Practices Form CFCP and Chapter 258, Election Code, Fair Campaign Practices Act from the Texas Ethics Commission.  Your subscription to this Code is Voluntary. If you elect to subscribe to the Code form, it should be filed with the City Secretary’s Office.  Please note that a candidate who has filed a copy of this form may indicate such on political advertising in a form determined by the Ethics Commission.
